Library to get new one-year home

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that a one (1) year lease was signed yesterday to acquire the White House across from the Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre, which formerly housed the Indigenous Services Canada local outlet.

The Skawenni:io Tsi Iewennahnotahkhwa Kahnawake Library will move into the building for that one-year period while work to secure a new, hopefully permanent location takes place. MCK Asset Management will assist with the move and the Library will open its doors once situated, which is expected later this month.

“The MCK has been dedicated to supporting the Skawenni:io Tsi Iewennahnotáhkhwa Kahnawà:ke Library as an essential grassroots community organization, and we are delighted to have reached this point,” said Education Portfolio Lead Jeffrey Diabo. “Moving forward, we will be actively involved in seeking a more permanent facility for this valuable community resource.”

In September 2024, it was announced that the Library’s former location would be demolished. This decision followed a joint inspection by MCK Public Safety, Occupational Health and Safety Inspectors, and the Asset Management Architectural Technician, who determined the building was unsafe. As a result, the building has been closed to the public.

The Skawenni:io Tsi Iewennahnotahkhwa Kahnawake Library began as a grass-roots initiative in 2002 with a mission to provide public library services, to be an excellent source of cultural information, to advance literacy, and to be a source of children’s programming.
