MCK addresses social media posts regarding road closures

Press Release

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is advising the community that it is aware of a recent social media post stating that all entrances to Kahnawà:ke will be closed to non-residents from 3pm to 6pm.

This announcement was not made through the MCK, Public Safety, or the Kahnawake Mohawk Peacekeepers (KMPK). The complete closure of all entrances to the community is not being looked at by the KMPK or MCK.

Peacekeepers have initiated redirection of non-local traffic away from the village area during the afternoon rush hour which is being done to mitigate congestion issues.

“While we acknowledge that traffic has been frustrating for everyone, closing roads and access points require concise planning and management of traffic,” said Ohén:ton Î:rate ne Ratitsénhaienhs Cody Diabo. “We must allow for dialogue and cooperation with all Kahnawa’kehró:non and ask at this time that no further actions take place that will further complicate the already frustrating traffic situation.”

The MCK is looking into further measures to help ease the congestion of traffic and limit access to the village area. The Old Chateauguay Road and Route 138 entrances to the village area will continue to be managed by the KMPK, who will announce any changes to measures.

Construction works in the neighboring municipality are expected to be completed by the week of December 8th. Motorists are asked to maintain respect and courtesy to concerned citizens who are aiding in traffic mitigation. Until then, the MCK remains committed to finding effective solutions.
