MCK advises community on circulating Canada Revenue Agency scam

Scam

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community of a scam circulating online and through social media that falsely claims a one-time Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) payment of $680 is being issued in September and October 2025.

The information on CRA payments was discussed last week at the September Community Meeting, which was later confirmed to be an online scam. As per information confirmed by the MCK, directly from the CRA, there is no one-time $680.00 CRA payment, in either September or October 2025. The websites promoting this information are not affiliated with the CRA.

“After we carried out our due diligence, we found out that there were online sites portraying a CRA announcement as additional payments,” said Ratsénhaienhs Ryan Montour, who brought up the information at the community meeting. “We did confirm the details and are ensuring the community is made aware.”

The CRA details that they did not introduce a new one-time payment, but the amount of up to $680 can be part of the GST/HST credit payment for a common-law couple based on their 2024 tax return for the 2025-2026 payment period. Eligibility for this credit is determined by the CRA based on income and household size, and payments are generally received quarterly after filing an annual tax return.

The similarities between the legitimate GST/HST payment on the real CRA website, and the false information circulated has since led to confusion.

The MCK understands that this can put a strain on some community members and reminds all to remain vigilant when coming across these types of notices. It is always strongly recommended to verify all information regarding tax benefit payments by contacting the CRA or Revenu Quebec.
