MCK announces strategy for Asbestos-Containing Materials

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to announce the launch of the Asbestos Containing Material Plan (ACM), an important step forward in the community’s ongoing efforts to manage the presence of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) and ensure the health and safety of all residents.

Led by MCK’s Public Safety Division (PSD), the ACM Plan is informed by extensive research and expert consultation, which recommends a “leave it in place” approach. The plan focuses on ACM in Kahnawà:ke, prevention, ensuring safety, and educating the community.

“We’re taking a proactive approach by ensuring we provide access to information,” said Tracey Snow, Special Projects Coordinator for the PSD. “The plan is based on expert advice, and that the leave-it-in-place approach is based on expert data.

For tracking purposes, PSD will commit to annual inspection processes where crews will perform annual walkthrough inspections in any identified lots to remove any visible ACM fragments that may make its way to the surface. The first inspection is scheduled for Wednesday, 18 Ohiarí:ha/June.

“The MCK remains committed to ensuring the safety of our community members as we switch gears to public education,” said Public Safety Lead Ratsénhaienhs Ryan Montour. “The ACM Plan is the result of years of work, research, and collaboration with health and environmental experts and is being made accessible to the community.”

The MCK is committed to protecting the health and safety of Kahnawa’kehró:non and will continue refining its approach based on the latest research, expert advice, and community feedback.

Easter Holiday office closure

Friday, April 3rd & Monday, April 6th, 2026

All administrative offices of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke will be closed.

 

Please note the following changes to Waste Management Department services during this period:

 

  • Friday, April 3rd – Administrative offices closed
  • Monday, April 6th – Waste Management services resume as usual; however, there will be no cardboard drop‑offs
  • Monday, April 6th – Transfer Depot will operate with reduced hours, from 8am to 2pm

 

Garbage pickup service will continue through the holiday without interruption.

 

All essential services will remain operational throughout the office closures. Regular administrative office hours will resume on Tuesday, April 7th, at 8:30am.
