The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) proudly announces the retirement of Stephanie Cross, who will conclude her distinguished career on Friday, September 26, 2025, after more than thirty-six (36) years of dedicated service to the community.
Stephanie began her MCK journey in August 1989 as a temporary employee. In October of that year, she worked in the Membership Department and was seconded as Secretary to Management from December 1989 until June 1991. Subsequently, she joined the Social Development Unit, now known as Client-Based Services, in her role as Welfare Administrator, for the Social Assistance Department, on September 14, 1992.
In 1993, Stephanie was appointed as a Justice of the Peace under Section 107 of the Indian Act by the Privy Council of Canada and began presiding at the Court of Kahnawà:ke in December of that year. In April 2000, she was also appointed as an Officiant by the Ministère of Justice of Quebec, allowing her to perform wedding ceremonies. Her judicial contributions have extended beyond Kahnawà:ke, as she has also presided over cases for the Akwesasne Mohawk Court.
Stephanie’s commitment to justice continues, as she will remain in her role with the Court of Kahnawà:ke and is not retiring from that position.
In 2002, her Welfare Administrator role was reclassified as Income Security Officer, and in 2009, she transitioned into the role of Social Development Case Officer, which she held until her retirement.
Beyond her formal roles, Stephanie deepened her connection to the community through participation in the MCK Language & Culture Training Program, gaining valuable cultural knowledge and insights that enriched her service and strengthened her bond with those she served.
“Stephanie’s professionalism and commitment to service is irreplaceable,” said Alexis Shackleton, Director of Client-Based Services. “Her dedication to our organization has been admirable. She will be missed.”
The MCK extends its heartfelt gratitude to Stephanie for her outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment to the community. Congratulations on a well-earned retirement!
