MCK issues 45-day moratorium on cannabis retail sales

Press Release

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that the Kahnawa’kehró:non Ratitsénhaienhs have enacted a 45-day moratorium on the retail sale of cannabis in the Territory, effective Wednesday, June 11, 2025, until July 25, 2025.

This decision follows renewed opposition from community members regarding cannabis sales. The Kahnawa’kehró:non Ratitsénhaienhs received calls ranging from offering full support, to demanding a full shutdown of the industry.

The 45-day moratorium will allow time to:

  • Engage with the community through public meetings;
  • Offer clear and accessible information on existing cannabis regulations;
  • Dispel misinformation about the regulated cannabis industry.

At the conclusion of the moratorium, the Kahnawa’kehró:non Ratitsénhaienhs will consider all things and determine the path forward.

Community participation in the upcoming engagement activities will be essential in guiding this decision.
