MCK responds to Minister Dubé’s resignation and Bill 2

Press Release

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is expressing deep concern and disappointment following the sudden resignation of Minister Christian Dubé, particularly in light of ongoing discussions surrounding Bill 2 and the commitments made under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed less than a year ago.

Minister Dubé’s decision to resign after committing to in‑person meetings with Kahnawà:ke representatives demonstrates a troubling lack of respect toward the community. These actions undermine the spirit of dialogue and collaboration that the MOU was intended to uphold.

In response, the MCK has issued a formal letter to Premier François Legault, outlining the community’s position and reaffirming the importance of honoring the commitments made in the MOU. The letter emphasizes that the government’s actions must reflect respect, accountability, and genuine partnership with First Nations communities.

“The resignation of Minister Dubé, coming so soon after convening meetings with our community, is not only disrespectful but destabilizing,” said Ohén:ton Í:rate ne Ratitsénhaienhs Cody Diabo. “We call upon Quebec Premier Francois Legault and his government to uphold their commitments.”

The MCK remains committed to protecting the rights and interests of the Kahnawà:ke community and will continue to hold the Government of Quebec accountable to its obligations.
