The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that it is aware of the visible airborne dust observed today near the Old Kahnawà:ke Survival School (KSS) campus (near the Eastern Boundary) and shares the strong concern this has caused among community members.
The MCK is actively looking into the matter and is taking steps to obtain clear information about what occurred, including the source of the dust, the materials involved, and what measures were in place to protect the health, safety, lands, and environment of the community.
“What the community saw today is alarming and unacceptable,” said Environment Portfolio Lead Ratsénhaienhs Ross Montour. “We are calling for immediate remediation and complete disclosure from all parties involved. Our community deserves answers.”
As part of this follow-up, MCK is sending a formal communication to Les Industries Associées de l’Acier Ltée, Mayor of Sainte-Catherine, and the MELCCFP (Ministère de l’Environnement): requesting immediate clarification and information regarding today’s incident.
MCK is treating this matter seriously and will continue to seek information, accountability, and appropriate follow-up from the relevant authorities. The Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office has since visited the site and will be monitoring the situation.
