MCK seeking feedback on Land Use Planning

Land Use Poster

The Lands Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is pleased to announce the launch of a Land Use Planning Community Engagement initiative. This initiative includes a community-wide survey, focus groups, and an Open House, and marks the beginning of the development of a comprehensive Land Use Plan for Kahnawà:ke. This is a pre-planning process that will help shape the Land Use Plan and includes assessments and gap analyses of current information to determine how the Lands Unit will move forward.

The future Land Use Plan will support the community’s right to self-determination by guiding how land and resources are stewarded now and into the future. The planning process will help identify areas of cultural and environmental significance, determine where protection is needed, and balance community priorities related to housing, economic development, and long-term sustainability.

As part of the engagement process, community members are invited to complete an online Land Use Planning Survey, which will gather input on how community lands are used today, how they should be protected, and where future development may be appropriate. Community feedback will play a central role in shaping the vision and direction of the Land Use Plan.

With engagement activities taking place on January 21st and 22nd, the MCK hopes to encourage increased participation in the survey. The survey will close on Monday, January 26th, at 4pm.

In addition to the survey, MCK will host two in-person focus group sessions and an Open House Kiosk to provide further opportunities for dialogue and input:

  • Focus Group 1: Wednesday, January 21st, from 9am to 12pm
  • Focus Group 2: Wednesday, January 21st, from 1pm to 4pm

Both focus group sessions will be held in the Lands Unit boardroom and will be conducted by Shared Value Solutions.

  • Open House Kiosk: Thursday, January 22nd, from 9am to 4pm in the lobby of Kahnawà:ke Services Complex

Community members are encouraged to participate in one or more of these engagement opportunities to share their perspectives and help shape the future of land use in Kahnawà:ke. To sign up for a focus group, access the survey, or learn more about the Land Use Planning process, please contact Lands Technician Assistant Summer Martin at summer.martin@mck.ca or call 450-638-8244. There will be a maximum of ten (10) people per focus group.

The MCK looks forward to hearing from community members and working together to begin the development phase of a future Land Use Plan that reflects community values, knowledge, and vision for future generations.
