MCK takes position on an undesirable

Press Release

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is taking decisive action today in response to yesterday’s mass shooting threat made on social media. Under the direction of the Grand Chief’s Office, Council passed a Mohawk Council Executive Directive (MCED) at an emergency, duly convened meeting, stating that the individual suspected of this threat will no longer be permitted within the Territory. Correspondence has been sent to the relevant Court and Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions in support of our recommendations regarding the conditions that should be applied to the individual, including being prohibited from residing in or entering the Territory.

Over the course of the day, the safe space of the community was under threat, causing deeply distressing anxiety and uncertainty for families, students, elders, and frontline workers. The MCK acknowledges the hurt that this has caused and applauds the community and essential frontline workers on the precautionary measures and adjustments that were put in place to ensure safety remained a priority.

“The actions of this individual, past and present, have disrupted the peace and tranquility of Kahnawà:ke,” said Community Safety Portfolio-holder Iohahí:io Delisle. “The safety and well-being of Kahnawa’kehró:non is paramount. The MCK is taking this step to reaffirm its commitment to public safety and to support those who uphold peace in the Territory.”

“While crisis brings about uncertainty for all of us, it’s these times that our community comes together,” said Ohén:ton Í:rate ne Ratitsénhaienhs Cody Diabo. “We have taken our position, and we will continue working with authorities to ensure we find a resolution in the aftermath.”

The MCK specifically acknowledges the swift and diligent work carried out by the Kahnawà:ke Peacekeepers in addressing the situation. The vigilance and voices of the community have shown that the position taken today is necessary.

Furthermore, today’s emergency meeting represents a critical step toward ensuring that this individual does not set foot in our community again. The MCK remains committed to protecting the safety, peace, and well-being of all community members.
