Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke begins key discussions with Mayor of Sainte-Catherine

Press Release

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) advises the community of a positive, productive meeting held on Friday, January 30, with representatives from the City of Sainte‑Catherine to address concerns regarding Terrapure’s activities in the Saint Lawrence Seaway, marking an important first step toward strengthening relations between the two communities.

The meeting brought together Ohén:ton Í:rate ne Ratitsénhaienhs Cody Diabo, Ratitsénhaienhs Iohahí:io Delisle, Jeffrey Diabo, Ross Montour, and the City’s delegation of Mayor Sylvain Bouchard, Director General Marie‑Josée Halpin, and Director of Communications Amélie Hudon.

During the meeting, the City clarified its intention to formally invite Kahnawà:ke to an upcoming emergency meeting to obtain critical information from the government authorities responsible for addressing environmental concerns linked to Terrapure’s operations.

“This meeting was an important first step in establishing open lines of communication with our neighbors,” said Ohén:ton Í:rate ne Ratitsénhaienhs Cody Diabo. “While we anticipate some challenges ahead, this provides the potential of reshaping how both communities can work together.”

“There is much work ahead of us, and continued collaboration will be essential as we address shared concerns and developments along the south shore that directly impact our community,” added Ratsénhaienhs Iohahí:io Delisle.

The Mayor and the Ratitsénhaienhs agreed to establish a structured communication channel between the respective organizations to facilitate information sharing, strengthen trust, and ensure healthy, ongoing coordination on matters of shared interest.

“Environmental concerns related to Terrapure affect both the citizens of Sainte-Catherine and of Kahnawà:ke,” said Mayor Bouchard. “It is essential that our two communities have access to the same information, in full transparency.”

Discussions will continue in the coming weeks, and information will be shared with the community as it becomes available.
