The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke is solemnly acknowledging the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ persons today. This day serves as a poignant reminder of the countless loved ones who have disappeared and have been murdered at disproportionate rates. The Council of Chiefs share in the profound grief of those who have lost their loved ones and recognize the immense pain endured by the families left behind.
The Council of Chiefs stands in solidarity with the families and communities affected by these tragedies. “I have committed myself to raising awareness and advocating for justice for my sister and others who have lost their loved ones,” said Heritage Portfolio lead Ietsénhaienhs Melanie Morrison, who is sister to Tiffany Morrison, a young Kahnawa’kehró:non who was missing for several years and later found to have been murdered. “It is crucial that we come together to support one another, work towards a future where such violence is eradicated, and find better ways to live our lives in a healthier way.”
