Nitsénhaiens meet with Quebec Premier, members of MRC

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that Ohén:ton Í:rate ne Ratitsénhaienhs Cody Diabo and Ratsénhaienhs Jeffrey Diabo met with Quebec officials and regional leaders on Saturday, July 11, 2026 in Saint Constant.

The meeting included discussions with Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette, members of the Municipalités regionales de comté (MRC), Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility Benoit Charette, and Deputy Premier, Minister of Internal Security and Minister responsible for Relations with First Nations and Inuit, Ian Lafrenière.

The gathering coincided with Quebec announcing the relaunch of its project to revamp a five-kilometre section of Route 132, extending from the Territories Eastern Boundary and the municipalities of Saint-Constant, Sainte-Catherine, and Delson.

Throughout the years, Ohén:ton Í:rate ne Ratitsénhaienhs Cody Diabo has consistently raised concerns about the project’s development, lack of meaningful consultation with Kahnawà:ke, and impending impacts to the Territory and community members.

The MCK supports improvements that enhance the safety of all road users, including many from Kahnawà:ke who frequently use this corridor. However, the MCK stresses that it can no longer remain on the sidelines and must be actively involved in all stages of the project—especially where it intersects with the Territory and the longstanding Seigneury of Sault Saint Louis land grievance.

As discussions advance, the MCK will be actively involved in the project’s technical committee to ensure Kahnawà:ke’s concerns are represented and addressed. A member of the MCK will be appointed as the liaison officer for the project and continue to ensure that Kahnawà:ke’s various concerns over the project are considered, the community’s interests are respected and our position of “not one more inch” is adhered to at every stage of the table discussions.

The MCK will continue to voice Kahnawà:ke’s various concerns and ensure that not one more inch is respected, heard, and agreed upon at every stage of the table discussions.
