Pause of bay work, remobilization to North Creek

The Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) wishes to advise the community that the boulder removal work in Tekakwitha Bay is paused due to unusually low water levels, which have made barge operations inefficient and unsafe. In-water work will be suspended for the remainder of 2025 while KEPO evaluates alternative approaches. The access ramp on the island will remain in place to reduce disruption if work resumes in 2026. This project aims to improve water flow and fish habitat in the bay.

KEPO’s second fall initiative is the North Creek restoration. RS Construction, the contractor for the bay project, will begin mobilizing equipment to the first staging area on Friday, September 19th, with work starting Monday, September 22nd. Restoration activities include removing debris and invasive plants, reshaping the creek channel, adding rocky substrate, and planting native vegetation.

Work will progress in approximately 100-yard sections, east to west, from downstream to upstream, with one culvert replacement planned. Each section is expected to take about one week. KEPO will coordinate with residents on traffic and access as needed.

KEPO staff will be on site throughout the project. Working hours are Monday to Saturday, 7am to 7pm, from Friday, September 19th to Saturday, November 15th. Minor traffic disruptions are expected.

Both projects are part of Entewahnekahserón:ni’: We are Rejuvenating the Water, funded by Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration Fund.

KEPO thanks the community for its continued patience and cooperation.
