The Mohawk Council of Kahnawake and the Indian Day School Settlement Coordinator, Louise Mayo, are pleased to announce Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) project funding for an awareness campaign to build capacity, raise awareness, and communicate the benefits of estate planning and the importance of having a Last Will and Testament.
The Caisse Populaire Kahnawake (CPK) will partner with the Estate Planning Awareness Campaign and offer three (3) free Estate Planning Workshops over the next several months. The campaign will also provide Estate Planning information on various social media platforms, produce a series of videos, and provide an Estate Planning Tool Kit. The goal is to provide community members with information and tools to assist in preparing a Will or have someone prepare it for you to ensure your wishes will be carried out and your loved ones are provided for.
The first CPK workshop (targeted for 50+) is a 4-hour session divided into two parts (2 hours each) scheduled for January 18 and February 8, 2024, at the Golden Age Club (GAC) from 10am to noon, with lunch to follow.
The second workshop is also a 4-hour session divided into two parts from 5 to 7pm on February 22 and 29, 2024, in the Kahnawake Shakotiiatakehnhas Community Services Ohkwari Room. A light dinner will be provided.
The third workshop (young families & single parents) takes place on March 21 at the GAC from 10am to 2:30pm. Provision will be made to provide an honorarium for parents requiring babysitting. Lunch will be provided.

“Indigenous Services Canada is responsible for estate services for First Nations in all provinces and has identified that less than 9% of First Nations peoples living on reserve have a Will when they pass away,” stated Louise Mayo. “When a person living on a reserve dies without a Will or does not name an Executor, ISC is responsible for appointing someone to manage the estate. The appointed person is the Administrator and has the same duties as an executor.”
