The Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke will be supervising restoration work on the Suzanne River beginning Monday, August 3, 2026, with completion anticipated by Friday, October 2, 2026. The project will involve the creation of a pond and the restoration of a natural creek channel along approximately 250 yards of the Suzanne River.
Rice Mohawk Landscaping will undertake the work under the supervision of KEPO and GeoMorphix Consulting.
The restoration project is being carried out to improve fish habitat and access to the Suzanne River, while also creating pond habitat for turtles, birds, and other wildlife. Work will include excavation to create a pond and restore a more natural curvature to a section of the creek. In addition, the creek channel will be slightly deepened to connect with the elevation of a future culvert.
The Saint Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation is scheduled to replace the Seaway Culvert in summer 2027 with a lower and larger structure that will maintain continuous contact with Seaway waters. This improvement will allow larger native fish species to access the creek throughout the year.
Minor disruptions may occur along Seaway Road during the construction period to accommodate construction vehicle traffic; however, the road will remain open. The bike trail along the Suzanne River, beginning behind Bully’s Truck Stop and extending to the Seaway Culvert, will be closed for the duration of the project.
