Fire Ban in Tioweroton

The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that a ban on all open fires is currently in effect in the Laurentians region, including Tioweró:ton.

Fire pits with spark arresters on a non-flammable base are permitted. However, any open burning, activities that may produce sparks, and the use of fireworks are strictly prohibited.

Public Safety also reminds the community that fire bans may be implemented throughout the summer and fall due to high temperatures and limited rainfall. Even short periods of heavy rain do not significantly reduce fire risk, as sustained rainfall is required. As a result, complete fire bans may be enacted when conditions are deemed high risk.

Public Safety, in collaboration with the Kahnawà:ke Fire Brigade, SOPFEU (Société de protection des forêts contre le feu), and Tioweró:ton caretakers, will monitor conditions and advise when risk levels change. Community members are encouraged to check the fire danger meter at the Tioweró:ton Office and visit: https://www.sopfeu.qc.ca/en/map/zone-laurentides/

As Tioweró:ton is entirely forested, fire prevention is critical. When permitted, fires must be contained, screened with a spark arrester, monitored at all times, and fully extinguished with water. A fire extinguisher or water source should always be nearby.

These measures are in place to reduce the risk of forest fires and protect the territory.

For more information, contact the Public Safety Division at 450-632-0635 or Tioweró:ton caretakers at 819-321-3375.
