Total Solar Eclipse Today

Public Safety Division Announcement

The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to remind community members that a Total Solar Eclipse will occur on today, Monday, April 8. The Eclipse will begin at approximately 2:14pm and end at 4:36pm. The full Eclipse will occur at 3:27pm and will only last 1 minute and 27 seconds.

During the Eclipse, except for the brief total phase when the Moon completely blocks the Sun, it is unsafe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing. It is important to note that the danger only occurs if people intend to look directly at the Sun. If they Do Not Look Up, there is no risk, and people can continue functioning outdoors as usual.

It is crucial to prioritize safety while enjoying this awe-inspiring celestial event. As Kahnawà:ke lies on the Eclipse’s path, many of us will have the opportunity to witness this remarkable phenomenon firsthand. However, it is essential to remember that observing a solar eclipse requires precautionary measures to protect our eyes and skin, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.

While experts have determined it is safe to look directly at the Sun during a certain portion of the Eclipse, it is ultimately the safest to avoid looking at all.
