Please respect our elders during fishing season

05/08/2015

The Community Protection Unit, in collaboration with the Kahnawake Peacekeepers and Fire Brigade would like to remind community members to be considerate of others when it comes to use of the Recreation Path and burning fires for fishing.

Multiple fires along the Recreation Path during fishing season can have a negative effect on many of our elders who may be in the area. People who suffer from asthma, emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are at a significantly higher risk of complications. Those having fires are being urged to ensure that they are of a minimal and reasonable size and to ensure that the fires are out completely when leaving the area.

The Kahnawake Peacekeepers would also like to inform the public that any fires that are deemed reckless are subject to fines. Additionally, motorized vehicles (cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, golf carts) are prohibited from driving on the Recreation Path. The path is only intended for use by walkers/joggers, cyclists and roller-bladers seeking a healthy lifestyle.  Because of the obvious dangers motorized vehicles can cause to pedestrians, the Peacekeepers can hand out citations to violators amounting to $154.00 per infraction.

If you see an out of control bonfire or motorized vehicles on the Recreation Path, please report it to the Peacekeepers at 450-632-6505.
