The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke’s Animal Control Services (KACS) of the Public Safety Division (PSD), in collaboration with the Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO), wishes to advise the community that a raccoon rabies vaccination-bait distribution operation will take place within the Territory on Thursday, August 27 and Friday, August 28, 2026.
The operation will be conducted by the Québec Ministry of the Environment, accompanied at all times by staff from KACS and KEPO. Vaccination baits will be placed in priority areas where raccoon activity is known to be concentrated.
This preventative initiative is intended to help immunize raccoons and other susceptible wildlife against raccoon rabies, reduce the risk of disease transmission, and protect the health of community members and domestic animals.
Important safety information
- Vaccine baits are intended for wild animals. If a bait is found, it should be left undisturbed and not handled.
- The bait may resemble a greenish packet or a khaki-green ravioli and may have a sweet smell.
- The vaccine contained in the bait cannot transmit rabies and is considered safe for people, pets, and the environment.
- Although the bait cannot transmit rabies, anyone who comes into contact with a broken or opened bait should wash their hands and any exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water, then contact Info-Santé 811 or call the number printed on the bait.
- If a pet consumes a bait and there are concerns or questions, a veterinarian should be contacted. Consumption of a bait does not replace a pet’s rabies vaccination.
Community members are reminded not to approach or handle wild animals. Anyone who observes a raccoon, skunk, or fox that appears sick, injured, disoriented, unusually aggressive, paralyzed, or deceased is encouraged to contact Kahnawà:ke Animal Control Services at 450-632-0635.
