The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to update the community on the hunting advisory issued on October 13, 2026, regarding Kahnawa’kehró:non harvesting within the traditional territories of other First Nations.
Following discussions this week with Superintendents from Quebec’s Wildlife Protection Branch, the MCK was advised that Kahnawa’kehró:non hunting outside of their own traditional territory could be charged with hunting without a valid Quebec hunting permit.
The MCK has serious concerns with this position and will be raising the matter with the appropriate Quebec Government authorities, as this may be a blatant disregard of our inherent rights to harvest.
Any Kahnawa’kehró:non planning to harvest within the traditional territory of another First Nation are reminded to contact the host community in advance and should request documentation acknowledging the host community’s awareness and acceptance of their presence. As stated in the October 13 notice, following the protocols of the host First Nation is an important part of respect, cooperation and maintaining nation-to-nation relationships. Should these protocols be followed and Kahnawa’kehró:non are then charged with hunting without a Quebec hunting permit, you are strongly encouraged to contact the MCK to discuss challenging these charges.
The MCK is committed to defending the inherent rights of Kahnawa’kehró:non while encouraging harvesters to respect the lands, wildlife and protocols of other First Nations.
