ATV use and safety expectations

ATV

The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke, in collaboration with the Kahnawake Peacekeepers, is issuing a serious reminder to all community members about the laws and safety protocols surrounding the use of All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), side-by-sides (Utility Task Vehicles/UTVs), and other off-road motorized vehicles.

Children should not be operating ATVs. These machines are powerful and carry serious risks when used improperly. There have been increasing concerns about youth riding ATVs unsupervised or without meeting legal requirements, putting themselves and others in danger.

Parents and guardians are reminded of the following legal and safety requirements:

  • Operators must be at least 16 years of age
  • A valid driver’s permit is required
  • ATVs must not be driven on main roadways, except when making a safe crossing
  • A maximum speed limit of 30 km/h must be observed
  • ATVs are intended for work-related purposes only and are not meant for road use
  • Helmets must be worn at all times
  • The number of passengers must not exceed the manufacturer’s specified capacity

ATVs, including four-wheelers and side-by-sides, are designed for off-road use only. It is also important to note that golf carts are not permitted on public roadways.

The Kahnawake Peacekeepers will continue to monitor and enforce these safety measures. Let’s work together to protect our community by following the rules and ensuring only those who are properly trained, licensed, and of legal age are operating these vehicles.
