Purpose:
The Operations and Maintenance Worker (Water and Sewer) is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the community’s water distribution and wastewater collection systems. The position ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient delivery of drinking water and the effective collection and treatment of wastewater in compliance with regulatory standards and health and safety requirements.
Roles & Responsibilities:
System Operation and Maintenance
- Operate, inspect, maintain, and repair water distribution and wastewater collection systems, including mains, valves, hydrants, pumps, lift stations, wells, and septic systems, and service connections.
- Monitor system performance and perform regular checks to ensure consistent water quality and proper wastewater flow.
- Assist with scheduled leak detection inspections.
- Conduct routine maintenance on pumps, motors, and other mechanical or electrical components.
- Inspects and tests equipment at SLS-13 booster station.
- Flush and clean water and sewer lines to prevent blockages and maintain flow efficiency.
- Assist with scheduled professional camera inspections.
- Perform daily inspections on the nine remote sewage stations to check influent, well levels, pump & controls operations.
- Inspect and clean catch basins across the community and note repairs to be scheduled, including pressure cleaning.
- Inspect well, septic, and overflow systems as required and notify supervisor when maintenance is needed.
Repairs and Troubleshooting
- Locate, diagnose, and repair leaks, breaks, or malfunctions in water and sewer systems.
- Respond to service calls and emergency situations, such as line breaks, blockages, or equipment failures.
- Safely operate tools, equipment, and machinery used in water and sewer system maintenance.
- Verify the adequacy of diesel engine performance, fan belts, radiators, filters, temperatures, fuel tanks, and oil levels and pressures.
- Make necessary adjustments to all plant equipment, i.e., changes oil, filters, gaskets, fuses, lubrications, and regulators.
- Monitor and repairs motors, pumps, and compressors as needed.
- Assess equipment status and communicates the need for major and minor repairs to the supervisor.
- Perform specified daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly scheduled maintenance and repair activities as per work orders provided by the supervisor.
Infrastructure and Equipment
- Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles, tools, and equipment used in daily operations.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of at sewage plant, water filtration plant, lift stations, and SLS-13 booster station.
- Responsible for grass cutting, including removal of litter and debris, grounds and plant maintenance duties according to seasonal requirements.
- Ensure the interior and exterior of facilities are kept clean and free of graffiti or other damage.
- Assist in installing new water and sewer lines, connections, and related infrastructure as required.
Health, Safety and Public Works operating procedures
- Work in compliance with occupational health and safety standards, including confined space, fall protection, and traffic control procedures.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safe work practices at all times.
- Report hazards, unsafe conditions, and incidents promptly to a supervisor.
- Perform daily preventative maintenance on assigned vehicle, including cleaning, washing, and greasing. Reports any issues or required repairs to the supervisor.
- Promote environmental responsibility and sustainable practices in all water and wastewater operations.
Communication and Collaboration
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and residents regarding maintenance issues, service disruptions, and repair activities.
- Support other departments or teams as required to ensure coordinated community services.
- Participate in training and certification programs related to water and wastewater operations.
- Responds to community member requests for information as required.
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma, plus five (5) years relevant maintenance, mechanical, or construction experience.
- Valid Quebec driver’s license (Class 5 or as required, class 1-3 is an asset)
*Training or certification in water and wastewater system operations (e.g., Water and Wastewater Operator Certification) is an asset.
*Water and wastewater operator certification is considered an asset.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Basic understanding of water distribution and wastewater collection system components and functions.
- Sound knowledge and skills associated with the principles and practices related to repairs and maintenance of water mains, fire hydrants, sewer mains, and storm drainage flushing and cleaning.
- Basic knowledge of mechanics to maintain diesel engines, compressors, and pumps.
- Ability to safely operate maintenance equipment, hand tools, and power tools.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to respond effectively to emergencies.
- Ability to read and interpret maps, blueprints, and technical manuals.
- Strong attention to detail, recordkeeping, and adherence to safety protocols.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Demonstrates professionalism, discretion, and courtesy when interacting with internal and external clients, fostering positive and respectful working relationships.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Adhere to MCK Employment Policies and Kanien’kéha Language initiatives.
- Ability to communicate in the Kanien’kéha and French languages is an asset.
- The willingness to learn the Kanien’kéha language.
Working Environment:
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Exposure to noise, dust, odors, chemicals, and potentially hazardous conditions.
- Requires physical effort, including lifting, bending, standing, and working in confined spaces.
- May be required to work evenings, weekends, and respond to emergencies or on-call assignments.
