JOINT PRESS RELEASE
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to announce a $45,000 contribution to the Kahnawà:ke Home Repairs Program led in partnership with PlanIt Consulting & Communications and Habitat for Humanity Quebec. This funding matches Rio Tinto’s initial contribution, bringing the total project budget to $90,000.
Launched in fall 2025, the pilot project aims to address the housing renovation needs of vulnerable Kahnawa’kehró:non. A complete roof replacement was carried out in November 2025, involving four students from the First Nations Regional Adult Education Center (FNRAEC) carpentry program. An additional two bathroom accessibility adaptation projects for persons with reduced mobility will begin this month, with seven other renovations taking place later in the year.
“Investing in housing means investing in the well-being of our families and in the future of our community,” said Housing Portfolio Lead Ratsénhaienhs Ryan Montour. “This partnership shows what we can accomplish together when we combine our resources and expertise.”
“The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke’s commitment confirms the value of our collaborative approach,” noted Sophie Dalbec, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Quebec. “This pilot project, which was meant to be a modest start, is now gaining momentum that will allow us to help more families.”
The project also brings together 207 Hardware, Home Depot St-Constant, and several volunteers recruited through PlanIt’s Volunteer Kahnawà:ke initiative. Work will be carried out by skilled professionals from both within and outside the community, supported by volunteer labor and material donations.
