The Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawá:ke wishes to inform the community that Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) Railway is scheduled to conduct its annual herbicide application along the railway corridor on Thursday, July 30th.
In conjunction with the application, soil, air, and water monitoring will be conducted by GHD Consulting in partnership with CPKC and KEPO to assess potential impacts from herbicide use along the tracks. Monitoring activities will begin on Wednesday, July 29th, near Lot 106, and will continue immediately following the herbicide application and one week afterward. Additional sampling will be conducted the following year to assess the longer-term movement or persistence of herbicides in the area.
The monitoring initiative follows community concerns regarding herbicide use along the railway corridor, and CPKC has developed a detailed monitoring plan in response.
Over the past several years, discussions regarding vegetation management along the railway corridor have continued to evolve. This year, KEPO has worked to ensure that comprehensive environmental monitoring accompanies the process to help address community concerns and better understand any potential impacts, to determine future approaches to deal with vegetation management along the railway corridor.
The sampling locations are identified on the map. Community members located near the testing sites will be contacted directly before sampling activities commence.
