Community feedback invited on draft regulation for Hot Mix Asphalt production

Press Release

The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is launching a public consultation on a proposed regulation for Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) production in the Territory. With no current permitting process in place, this regulation seeks to create a process and set clear guidelines to ensure environmental safety and public health while fulfilling a mandate issued by the MCK Council of Chiefs in 2023.

“This is your chance to shape the conversation,” said Ratsénhaiens Ryan Montour, who holds the Public Safety portfolio. “We want to hear directly from the people.”

Community members are invited to learn more and share input as part of the early feedback phase. Written feedback will also be accepted by email from Tuesday, July 22ⁿᵈ to Tuesday, August 12ᵗʰ, 2025, at HMAregulation@mck.ca. Additionally, members of the Technical Drafting Committee will appear on K1037’s Tetewathá:ren noon hour talk show on Tuesday, July 22ⁿᵈ, 2025, to discuss the process so far and what the regulation may include.

“We are not presenting a finished product; we’re opening the floor. This is your opportunity to voice concerns, ask questions, and help shape the direction of the regulation,” said Commissioner of Public Safety Lloyd Phillips.

Open consultation sessions will take place at the Golden Age Club on:

  • Friday, July 25ᵗʰ, 2025 from 1pm to 3pm
  • Thursday, July 31ˢᵗ, 2025 from 9am to 11am

This process follows the Community Decision-Making and Review Process (CDMRP) and is currently at the initial feedback stage. Technical details to be shared and discussed in a later phase once a draft is developed.
