The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that the Kahnawà:ke Justice Commission (Commission) is seeking one (1) additional community representative to serve on the Commission.
Community representatives on the Commission are responsible to:
- Provide oversight and overall strategic direction to MCK Justice Services
- Ensure the independence of judges
- Ensure the institutional independence of the Courts of Kahnawà:ke
- Ensure the independence of Decision-makers appointed to the Administrative Tribunal
The Commission consists of three (3) community representatives with decision-making privileges. The Commissioner of Justice serves as Chairperson with no decision-making privileges. The Commission’s mandate is to provide oversight and strategic direction to MCK Justice Services that aligns with the political priorities of the MCK Ratitsénhaienhs. It is also mandated to protect and defend the integrity of the Kahnawà:ke Justice System.
The Commission meets monthly. An honorarium is provided as per the Kahnawà:ke Justice Commission Honorarium Policy. A signed privacy waiver for a criminal background check will be required. Eligibility requirements can be found in the Terms of Reference for Community Representatives.
