The Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) recently authorized the use of Community Mobilization dollars for the creation of a Recreation Master Plan and Recreation Center Feasibility Study. Community Mobilization dollars come from a funding envelope from the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Health and Social Services Commission (FNQLHSSC) and administered by the Sports and Recreation Unit.
The Recreation Master Plan and Recreation Center Feasibility Study Request for Proposals (RFP) was drafted by the Kahnawake Recreation Steering Committee (KRSC), which is made up of representatives from the MCK and the Kahnawake Youth Center (KYC) and also includes three (3) community seats. The RFP was sent to eleven (11) consulting companies, six (6) proposals were submitted for review, and a proposal was selected.
The RFP Scope of Work included a Recreation Master Plan with community consultation, market study, facility evaluation, and programs and services analysis components, and a Recreation Facility and Design component.
“Since its original inception in 1972, the KYC has expanded its services and now offers programming to all demographics in the community, with current membership ranging from 5 to 84 years old,” said KYC Executive Director Kyle Zacharie. “As the only multi-generation recreation facility on the territory, the KYC has outgrown its physical space and ability to meet the ever-growing needs of the community. One of the goals of the study is to identify a potential new facility and/or a creative solution to accommodate these needs.”
“A collaboration between the MCK and the KYC is essential in creating a clear set of goals for community parks and recreation for the next ten (10) years,” said Sports and Recreation Portfolio Lead Harry Rice. “Using the completed Recreation Master Plan and the data collected will directly impact the design, renovation, or expansion of facilities and services.”
The announcement of the successful bid will be made once the contract has been signed.
