Public Safety Commission/Division

The Public Safety Commission takes an integrated approach to Public Safety to ensure the well-being of the public in the Mohawk Territory of Kahnawà:ke, including Tioweró:ton. This will involve prevention strategies, advocacy/education, and strategic planning to address safety issues.

About Us

The Public Safety Commission is authorized by the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCED #93-2019/2020) and is responsible for establishing and supervising a comprehensive approach to Public Safety Management for the Territory. This involves Mitigation, Preparedness, Protection, Response, and Recovery principles. Commission members include the Chief of the Peacekeepers, the Chief of the Kahnawà:ke Fire Brigade, the Executive Director of KSCS, the Director of the Kahnawà:ke Labor Office, the Director of Public Works, and the Commissioner of Public Safety.

The Public Safety Division aligns with and contributes to the MCK Strategic Plan and the Comprehensive Community Plan, supporting the community’s vision. It is accountable to both the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke and the Kahnawà:ke Public Safety Commission for ensuring efficient and effective public safety within the community.

Services & Departments

Conservation Officers

Responsible for investigating violations and enforcing all applicable laws within the Territory related to conservation, environment, and other duties recognized by the Public Safety Commission. Additionally, the organization actively engages with the Community to provide education and raise public awareness about these important areas.

Animal Control Services

Enforces regulations and provides public education on animal services, prevention, and care for domesticated and non-domesticated animals within the Territory.

Public Safety Inspectors

Ensure that safety standards are met according to relevant laws and regulations. This includes verifying that all permit or license applicants have met the required safety standards before their permit or license is approved.

Comprehensive Emergency Management

Ensure safety by identifying potential risks and establishing regulations and processes. These measures help mitigate risks and develop protection plans to safeguard critical objectives. Additionally, it is important to mobilize operational resources to stabilize incidents and meet basic human needs.

Kahnawà:ke Search and Rescue Team

Responds to requests to aid individuals in distress or experiencing eminent danger in Kahnawà:ke, Tioweró:ton, or other locations.

Landfill Services & Inspections

Ensures that the Kahnawà:ke Sanitary Conditions Law and all other relevant laws are followed by investigating and monitoring violations. They also issue short-term permits for landfill movement and provide public education on landfill services and laws within the community.

Community Supervision

Provides direct parole and probation supervision in the community to ensure compliance with release plans authorized by the Parole Board of Canada or other competent Jurisdictions for Kahnawà:ke members on post-institutional release. Additionally, we manage and coordinate a holistic social reintegration team for offenders by devising community release plans and monitoring their compliance in line with internal procedural policies and protocols.

Kahnawá:ke Peacekeepers

The Kahnawá:ke Peacekeepers’ primary service is law enforcement within the Territory focusing on safety, protection and accountability as its key areas of concern.

Kahnawá:ke Fire Brigade

The Kahnawá:ke Fire Brigade services the community in areas of fire suppression, evacuation procedures, fire protection, fire prevention, fire inspections, alarm functions, testing of emergency plans, building codes compliance and emergency medical response and ambulance service.

Kahnawá:ke Peacekeepers

The Kahnawá:ke Peacekeepers’ primary service is law enforcement within the Territory focusing on safety, protection and accountability as its key areas of concern.

Daily tasks include patrols of the community ensuring that laws are being abided by, issuing tickets to offenders, responding to calls for assistance and promoting safety to the public.

Peacekeepers Services Board

The Peacekeeper Services Board’s mandate is to establish effective policies and guidelines for the management and administration of the Kahnawá:ke Peacekeepers.

Kahnawá:ke Fire Brigade

The Kahnawá:ke Fire Brigade services the community in areas of fire suppression, evacuation procedures, fire protection, fire prevention, fire inspections, alarm functions, testing of emergency plans, building codes compliance and emergency medical response and ambulance service.

Daily tasks include responding to calls for assistance for both fire and medical emergencies, conducting fire safety inspections, training of personnel, providing safety information to community members, and responding to mutual aide calls.
