New family housing units underway in Kahnawà:ke

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) Housing Unit, in partnership with Kahnawà:ke Shakotiia’takehnhas Community Services (KSCS), is proud to announce the construction of three new single-family housing units in the New Development to support clients with growing families.

These units are funded through Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) Child and Family Services dollars, specifically earmarked for housing initiatives. This funding envelope also supports the ongoing ISC Renovation project, aimed at improving existing privately owned homes in the community.

“We’re excited to see these pilot projects take shape, part of the MCK mandate to provide safe, affordable housing in alignment with KSCS in strengthening a strong family unit,” said Ratsénhaienhs Ryan Montour. “The three units are being built by a local contractor, reinforcing our commitment to supporting local businesses and trades. The next project will see the construction of a six-plex, slated to begin later this year.”

“Access to safe and suitable housing is a cornerstone of family well-being,” said Davis Montour, Director of Family and Child Services at KSCS. “For families, having a stable home environment is directly tied to the health, development, and future success of their children. These new units will not only meet the immediate need for adequate housing, but they will also create a foundation for long-term stability, connection, and pride in the community. By investing in these spaces, we are investing in the strength and resilience of Kahnawa’kehró:non families for years to come.”

Both projects—the new builds and the renovations—are expected to continue next year, with plans to expand funding for repairs and additional housing. These initiatives reflect a collaborative effort between KSCS and MCK Housing, with funding flowing to the community through KSCS. The goal is to create sustainable, family-friendly housing solutions that meet the evolving needs of Kahnawa’kehró:non.
