The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke, in collaboration with the Kahnawake Fire Brigade (KFB), wishes to remind community members about the increased risk of grass fires due to the dry weather. Most forest fires begin because of weather conditions and/or human negligence.
Burning brush or debris from yards can be dangerous. Contrary to popular belief, burning grass does not help lawns grow faster. The KFB strongly advises against burning any brush. Instead, it is recommended to rake lawns and leave for pick-up by Waste Management.
Brush fires pose significant risks to the health and safety of the community and first responders. Fires can double in size within minutes if not continuously monitored or properly extinguished, potentially spreading to unintended areas.
The community is also asked to ensure that campfires are contained within a firepit and always monitored. Fires can start small, such as from a campfire, firecrackers, fireworks, or even a cigarette, and quickly develop into larger fires that endanger nearby residences, neighbors, and the community. Under the right conditions, wind and dry vegetation can cause embers from a fire to travel up to a mile, igniting new areas.
Additionally, any suspicious activity or sightings of grass fires should be reported to the Peacekeepers at 450-632-6505. Starting grass fires is a criminal offense.
For more information on grass fires, contact the KFB at 450-632-2010 or the Public Safety Division at 450-632-0635.
Be safe! Compost or bag instead of burning brush!
