Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke meets with Parti Québécois leadership

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that Ohén:ton Í:rate ne Ratitsénhaienhs Cody Diabo, Ratitsénhaienhs Iohahiio Delisle, and Jeffrey Diabo recently met with Parti Québécois (PQ) Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, PQ MNA Pascal Paradis, and policy advisor Jean-Nicolas Mailloux to discuss matters related to Bill 1 (Québec Constitution), and Québec’s relationship with Kahnawà:ke

This meeting also marks an important step in building relationships and understanding between Kahnawà:ke and the Parti Québécois. Follow-up meetings are already in the works, reflecting a shared commitment to continuing discussions on key issues.

“It was encouraging to engage with Parti Québécois leadership for a respectful exchange of perspectives,” said Ohén:ton Í:rate ne Ratitsénhaienhs Cody Diabo.  “We had the opportunity to share our position on rights, lands, and our history, while hearing how they want to govern themselves and the challenges they face from federal overreach. We look forward to continuing this dialogue in the spirit of mutual respect and understanding.”

“Respect and dialogue are key to achieving mutual understanding between our Nations. Ohén:ton Í:rate ne Ratitsénhaienhs Cody Diabo and I agreed to maintain an open dialogue and to honor the principles of respect, friendship, and peace in our relations,” said PQ Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon. “I firmly believe we have common interests in defending our respective languages, cultures, and customs, including in facing federal overreach.”

The MCK views this as a positive development and a demonstration of the potential to develop a true partnership in government-to-government relations. Kahnawà:ke remains open to speaking with all parties who are interested in discussing and improving this relationship.
